August, 2006 ROI team

Mr. Sébastien Haye, an Environmental Scientist with a Masters from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland spent four months at ROI. He is coordinating a project on social and environmental impacts from utilization of agricultural residues.

August, 2006 International Participation - Birmingham, U.K.

The Industrial Symbiosis Symposium organized by Yale University, U.S.A and the National Industrial Symbiosis Program (NISP), U.K. was held in Birmingham, U.K. Mr. Ramesh Ramaswamy, represented ROI and presented its work on “Industrial Ecology and Regional Development” on the 5th and 6th August 2006.

August, 2006 International Participation - Oxford, U.K.

The prestigious Gordon Research Conference on Industrial Ecology was held at Queen’s College, Oxford, U.K. in August 2006. It was attended by eminent industrial ecology specialists. Mr. Ramesh Ramaswamy of ROI, on invitation, made a presentation on the "Applications of Industrial Ecology in Developing Countries".

Ms. Vijayakumari joined our team at ROI in June 2006. Vijayakumari has a Masters in Technology from A.C. College of Technology, Chennai, which is affiliated to Anna University. She will also be working an investigation of the Doddaballapur Industrial Area near Bangalore to recommend sustainable water management strategies.

June, 2006 JIE Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE) celebrated its 10th anniversary with its inclusion in the Expanded Science Citation Index on 11th May 2006. The event was held at Yale University, U.S.A and included a panel discussion on the past and future of industrial ecology. Eminent industrial ecologists - John Ehrenfeld, Executive Director of the International Society for Industrial Ecology and co-editor of the Journal; Faye Duchin, Prof. of Economics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and world leader in input-output analysis for environmental assessment; Ramesh Ramaswamy, Director of the Resource Optimization Initiative in Bangalore, India - a leading organization applying industrial ecology in developing countries; and Charles Powers, Chair of the Industrial Ecology, Pollution Prevention, and the New York/New Jersey Harbor Project at the New York Academy of Sciences were present of the panel. Reid Lifset, Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Industrial Ecology was the moderator.

May, 2006 International Participation - Boston, U.S.A.

Mr. Ramesh Ramaswamy delivered a lecture on the 24th May 2006 at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, which is part of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, U.S.A. His lecture on “Applying Industrial Ecology in India” and was part of the Energy Technology Innovation Policy (ETIP) Speaker series. The lecture was well attended by faculty and researchers from Harvard University as well as other institutions in the area.

December, 2005 National Participation - Hyderabad, India

Mr. Marcos Sanjuan attended the Green Business Summit organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), in Hyderabad from 7 to 8 December 2005. He made a presentation on Industrial Ecology and ROI's work. The presentation was well appreciated, judging from the numbers of calls and e mails that have been coming in. The meeting was attended by senior executives from different industries in India.

December, 2005 Field visit - Industrial Ecology and Agriculture

The ROI team undertook a field trip to some of the agricultural areas in Karnataka where Rice and Sugarcane are grown. The purpose of this trip was to collect data for a resource flow analysis to identify avenues to reduce consumption of fresh water and raw materials. The team met a cross-section of farmers and conducted structured in-depth interviews.

November, 2005 Visitor

ROI had an unusual visitor - Mr. Richard Julian. He was travelling with a ""recycled"" bicycle for the project called ""The wheels of the recycling question"". He started his journey on the 5th of March from Paris and arrived at the ROI office in December after travelling through many countries, including Bulgaria, Armenia, Turkey and Iran. He expects to end his long journey in Shanghai. His trip is a part of a program of a non-profit institution - Keila, in France. His journey is to spread awareness on environmental issues among the communities that he comes across. He is an avid student of Industrial Ecology and developed an interest in this field during his engineering course in the University of Troyes. Richard has also been involved in a few Industrial Ecology projects in France as a team member of the Ecologie Industrielle Conseil, a consulting organization.

September, 2005 International Participation - Hangzhou, China

Mr. Ramesh Ramaswamy and Prof. Suren Erkman participated in the China-EU Forum on Sustainable Development in Beijing & EU-China Eco-Industrial Park Workshop in Hangzhou, China
