Ms. Sowmya Reddy joins ROI's research team to work on resource optimization strategies for large manufacturing industries. She will be working on ROI's collaborative investigation with the Center for Development Finance, Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai.

Dr. Weslynne Ashton, Director of the Program on Industrial Ecology for Developing Countries, Yale University visited ROI for two months. Dr. Ashton played an important role in facilitating ROI research and capacity building activities.

 
 
October, 2009 National Participation - Bangalore, India
 

Dr. Megha Shenoy was invited by the Karnataka Pollution Control Board to present strategies from industrial ecology to reuse wastes produced from rice mills in south India. She presented the main concept of industrial ecology and sustainable strategies to reuse non-hazardous ash that is produced from burning paddy husk as a fuel in rice mills.

Prof. Suren Erkman is appointed as the Chairman of ROI. He co-founded ROI in 2005 along with Mr. Ramesh Ramaswamy. Prof. Suren Erkman is the Director of the Institute for Land Use Policies and Human Environment (IPTEH), Faculty of Geosciences and Environment, Sorge Area - Amphipole Building, University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

Dr. Megha Shenoy joins ROI as its Research Director. Megha has been associated with ROI since 2008. She is currently a research affiliate at the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University, U.S.A. She completed her Masters and PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and a post doctoral fellowship from the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University, USA.

 
 
June, 2009 International Participation - Kalundborg, Denmark
 

Dr. Megha Shenoy represented ROI at the 6th Annual Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium held at Kalundborg, Denmark from the 18th to 20th June 2009. Megha is a research affiliate of ROI and a post doctoral associate at the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University, U.S.A.

Dr. Megha Shenoy presented ROIs work on "Industrial Ecology in India - past, present and future" along with Prof. Marian Chertow, Yale University, "Industrial Symbiosis and Residual Recovery in the Nanjangud Industrial Area, Karnataka, India" along with Ariana Bain, Yale University, U.S.A and "Applying industrial ecology tools to increase understanding of demand-side water management in Bangalore, India" along with Matthew Eckelman and Marian Chertow, Yale University at the 5th International Conference on Industrial Ecology held at Lisbon, Portugal from the 21 to the 24 June 2009. All three presentations were well received by the wide audience at the conference.

 
 
March, 2009 Collaboration with Yale University, USA
 

ROI organized a program on Industrial Ecology for Masters candidates from the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University, USA. This program was part of the Advanced Seminar on Industrial Ecology at The Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University and included an extensive field investigation to quantify the life cycle impacts from using agricultural residues as fuel in industrial processes in south India. This investigation stems from findings of the study on Industrial Symbiosis and Residual Recovery in the Nanjangud Industrial Area, Karnataka, India by ROI and Yale University, USA
