Mr. Lokanath S. joins ROI's research team. He has completed his Masters degree in Public Policy from the School of Public Policy, Indian Institution of Charted Financial Analysis of India (ICFAI), Hyderabad, India. He will be investigating solutions to improve energy efficiency, water recycling and reduce carbon di-oxide emissions in the silk reeling sector around Bangalore.

Ms. Rashmi Kumari joins ROI to complete a 4 month internship for her masters thesis at TERI University, New Delhi. She will be working on sustainable strategies to improve energy efficiency, water recycling and reduce carbon emissions in the silk reeling facilities around Bangalore.

Ms. Arsha Branson joins ROI to complete a 1 month internship. She will be working on sustainable strategies to improve energy efficiency, water recycling and reduce carbon emissions in the silk reeling facilities around Bangalore. Arsha is completing a Bachelors degree in Economics and Social Science, at Sydney University, Australia. She is interested in learning about the factors (social, economic and environmental) that contribute to achieving inclusive development.

Sustainability Tomorrow - a magazine published by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development publishes an article by Dr. Weslynne Ashton, Prof. Marian Chertow and Dr. Megha Shenoy on "Industrial Ecology- Developing Systemic Solutions to Climate Change and other Environmental Challenges in Indian Industry."

 
 
December, 2009 National Participation - Mysore, India
 

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, ROI, and the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale University conducts an awareness program on Industrial Ecology on 3 December 2009 - National Pollution Prevention Day in Mysore. Dr. Ashton spoke on "Industrial Ecology: Crafting effective policies and business practices for sustainably managing resources"; Dr. Shenoy presented results of ROI and Yale University's investigation on Industrial Symbiosis in Nanjangud in a talk titled "Building eco-industrial networks in Nanjangud". The presentations were followed by a symbiosis workshop. The program was well received by managers from industries in the NIA, members of academic institutions in Mysore and regulatory bodies such as the KSPCB.

 
 
December, 2009 International Participation - Chennai, India
 

Dr. Megha Shenoy presents a paper on ""Resource reuse and recycling in an Indian industrial network: efficiency and flexibility considerations"" by Ariana Bain, Weslynne Ashton and Megha Shenoy at the presentation during the international conference on “Infrastructure systems 2009: Developing 21st century Infrastructure Networks”, co-sponsored by the Next Generation Infrastructure Foundation, SSN College of Engineering and IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Section. The conference was held at SSN College of Engineering, Tamil Nadu from 9 December - 11 December 2009.

November, 2009 Internship
 

Ms. Melanie Studer and Mr. Samuel Wicki from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland are doing a two month internship at ROI. They are working on 'Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Recycling in Bangalore'. EPS, colloquially known as Thermocole in India, is a widely used as a packaging material. Samuel and Melanie have completed their undergraduate studies at the University of Lausanne and are keen to gain some research experience in India.

Mr. Tanuj Thamanna joins ROI's research team to work on an investigation on 'Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Recycling in Bangalore'. Tanuj has completed his undergraduate studies from St. Joseph's College, Bangalore. He is keen on pursuing a career in forensic sciences.

Mr. Sonu Soman joins ROIs research team to work on 'Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Recycling in Bangalore'. Sonu has an undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies from St. Joseph's College, Bangalore. He is a keen wildlife enthusiast.

 
 
November, 2009 Collaboration with IFMR, Chennai, India
 

ROI and the Center for Development Finance, Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai have started a collaborative investigation to optimize resources for large industries and clusters of industries in India. They have completed a project on optimizing resources at a large plastic film manufacturing industry near Pune, Maharashtra and are starting another project on estimating solvent loss in volatile emissions and effluent of bulk drug industries in and around Hyderabad.
